Legacy Lanterns
Canvas Specialty

This project consisted of 15 architecturally designed outdoor lanterns mounted on the sixth floor pool deck of a new 14-story residential community in Hollywood, Calif. The lanterns were designed to look like tikis and, along with the landscaping, helped to create a Polynesian-themed environment.

Each lantern is more than 12ft tall, weighs approximately 600 lbs and had to be crane lifted into place on the sixth floor. The lanterns had to be structurally engineered as stand-alone fabric structures, and certified by UL as an electrical fixture. Each of the lanterns was installed on an individual pedestal base in the midst of the landscape garden.

Canvas Specialty was given the concept sketches from the architect and designed the units to meet the architect’s requirements and the requirements of ASCE 7-05, 85 mph wind. Canvas Specialty then created electrical specifications and fabricated a test unit that was certified by a UL test facility. The units were fabricated to allow for maintenance access to all eight of the electrical fixtures and each unit’s individual transformer. The units were fabricated with Ferrari Soltis® material that was welded so the entire structure could be wrapped without having any visible fabric seams.

The client and architect were very pleased with the lanterns. They were delivered on time and within budget.
